The Art of the Pause: Trusting Creative Seasons

A peek inside my studio this month — a little messy, a little magical, and always full of color.

Hi friends, 👋

Every artist has their seasons. Some are full of color and energy ... paint under the fingernails, creative sparks flying, ideas pouring out faster than the brush can move.

And then there are the quieter ones, the in-between spaces when the brushes sit still and the studio is tidier than usual.

For a long time, those pause seasons used to make me anxious. I’d wonder when the inspiration would return… and why it had left me in the first place.

But over the years, I’ve learned something important:

The pause wasn’t a lack of creativity. It was preparing the way for it.

The trees don’t bloom year-round. The tides don’t always rush to shore. And the soul doesn’t create nonstop. There are cycles of growth, of rest, of gathering strength before the next burst of beauty.

When I allow myself that exhale, that quiet, that space, I find that I return to the canvas renewed. My hands feel ready again. My mind feels clearer. My heart feels excited.

Rest is not a break from creativity. Rest is part of creativity.

During these slower moments, inspiration comes from simple things: • Time with my family • Worship and prayer • A nature walk • Organizing my studio • Letting ideas quietly percolate

Quiet doesn’t mean you’re stuck. It means you’re growing roots. 🌿

If you’re in your own pause, I hope this encourages you: Be gentle with yourself. Trust the rhythm. The next creative season is coming and it will be worth the wait.

Warmly,

Viviana Stone
