Reflections from the Road: What Art Fairs Teach Me (Every Time)

There’s something about an art fair that’s hard to explain unless you’ve done one.

It’s exhilarating. It’s exhausting. It’s unpredictable. It’s deeply human.

You set up your work like you’re creating a little temporary world, and then you open it up to strangers. Some people walk past without a glance. Some linger. Some fall in love. Some ask questions that surprise you. Some become collectors. Some become friends.

And every time, I learn something.

LAGUA ART A FAIR 2025

1) People don’t just buy art — they buy connection

When someone purchases a painting, they’re not just buying color on canvas. They’re buying:

  • a feeling

  • a story

  • a moment they want to live with

  • a piece of someone else’s courage

I’ve watched people soften when they connect to a piece. I’ve watched couples debate (lovingly) which wall it belongs on. I’ve watched someone’s face light up like they found their thing.

That never gets old.

2) Rejection is part of visibility

Art fairs teach you to be brave in public.

Not everyone will like your work. That’s not only okay, it’s necessary. If everyone liked it, it would probably mean it wasn’t saying anything specific.

Rejection at an art fair isn’t a sign you’re failing. It’s a sign you’re showing up

.

3) The “right person” changes everything

Sometimes a painting sits and sits… and then the right person walks in and says, “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.”

Not “pretty.” Not “nice.”Exactly what I’ve been looking for.

That’s the magic.

4) The work keeps evolving

Every show teaches me something about my own style:

  • what I’m drawn to

  • what collectors respond to

  • what feels most “me”

  • what I want to explore next

It’s like a conversation between my studio and the world, and I’m always listening.

5) Community matters more than I expected

Artists encourage each other in ways people don’t always see. We trade tips, share laughs, help each other during the long days, and celebrate wins.

Art can be solitary in the studio. Art fairs remind me that I’m part of something bigger.
